Tribal Mosaic 2011 Workshops 1 hour in duration, a selected few will be 1.5 hours. Please find workshop times listed below. This unique retreat is tailored for ALL LEVELS in bellydance from the NEW beginner through to the professional. Several of the workshops listed below may be repeated due to popularity. Chandra (Austinmer) Fire is a breathtaking dance prop to perform with. It oozes wow factor and once you gain confidence and understand the safety procedures you will love what fire adds to your dance performance. As one of the four classical elements fire is commonly associated with the qualities of energy, assertiveness, and passion. Like the sun fire provides light and warmth. The power of fire is strong and can excite both the dancer and audience. The sense of danger can entice as well as stimulate the onlookers and draw a crowd in and it holds the power to keep them captivated. The combination of beautiful tribal belly dance and fire makes for a spectacular performance. In this workshop you will be taught the safety procedures of dancing/performing with fire, lighting and extinguishing the props, correct handling of the props when lit, various fire props that are used in tribal belly dancing, the role of the fire safety person and what you will need in your fire kit and fire safety kit. You will also be shown some slow and fast movements that suit dancing with fire.
Bio: Chandra. Began studying ATS is Sydney in 2004 and was a member of Urban Turban for 2 years. It was during this time she was introduced to dancing with fire as a prop. Since 2006 she has been a member of Tribal Jewels in Wollongong and has loved performing with such a beautiful dance troupe.
*What to bring to the workshop: a pen & paper, water bottle, fire props (if you own any). Danielle (Byron Bay Region) An introduction to the basics of American Tribal Style Belly Dance moves and formations. Movements will be demonstrated and broken down clearly and simply with emphasis on posture and technique. Come and learn this earthy and feminine dance, connect with your body and your tribal 'sisters'! This workshop will likely be offered twice over the weekend if beginners are in favour of it to be repeated for drilling purposes.
Bio: Danielle has been studying and performing American Tribal Style and Tribal Fusion intensively for over 6 years with a range of International and National Master Teachers including: Carolena Nericcio (founder and director of Fat Chance Belly Dance), Paulette Rees-Denis (Gypsy Caravan), Jill Parker, Rachel Brice, Devi Mamak and Jacqueline Peperkamp. Danielle has danced with Tribal Jewels, Urban Qabila and Las Musas and now teaches and directs her own troupe in Byron Bay - 'The Barefoot Gypsies'. *What to bring/wear? Comfortable attire for ease of movement e.g. stretch pants or harems, stretch top, tribal skirt, hip scarf or belt and water.

We will go over the current moves of workshop participants, tips to improve technique and add moves to your repertoire. Please bring practice poi with you. Devi (Blue Mountains) Sick of playing the same RLR pattern over & over or having to stick to basic steps so you can zill & dance at the same time? In this workshops Devi will show you different way to zill & dance. Firstly Devi will show you some creative new combinations that can be performed with or without zills, as a solo, duet or in a group. Once we have the steps down Devi will then show you some exciting new zill combinations that she has created that will go beautifully with your new combos or you can inject them into your own choreography.
Bio: Devi Mamak, member & artistic director of Ghawazi Caravan is one of Australias premier ATS dancers, teachers and choreographers, having taught many of the top dancers in the genre. Devi is also well known for creatively fusing other styles such as Flamenco, Indian, Egytian & Ballet. She is renowned throughout Australia, NZ, Asia and Europe for her creative, thorough and approachable teaching style and her beautiful and commanding stage presence. Devi has co-taught Carolena Nericcio's General Skills certificate on several occasions with several of Devi's own steps being accepted into the ATS syllubus. *BYO zills

FiFi (ACT) FiFi will share with you the secret of multidirectional Tribal style bellydance, encouraging you to mix it up with dancing on the left hip as well as the right. Using some familiar moves to get you going, she will introduce you to a few new moves from the BlackSheep BellyDance Level 2 format. And just for coming along, she'll throw in a couple of Tribalista originals including FiFi's double spin, Chris's flight and a fun new variation on the FCBD Chico with partner. This workshop is for confident dancers who have a sound understanding of Tribal Style Bellydance. Bring your zills, your voice (for the vocal cues) and an open mind :-)
![]() Fine Figure 8s and Beautiful Body WavesSat 4pm - 5pm
Hilary (Sydney) Learn, correct or refine your technique to deliver sinuous, smooth and graceful hip and torso figure 8s and body waves. Starting with the usual formats of horizontal, vertical; standard and reverse we'll then move onto engaging combinations that will add interest to your isolation work and enhance your performance presence. Bio: Hilary Has spent most of her life studying dance and movement and has been part of the tribal bellydance community as a teacher and performer since 2004. She is one of Sydney's most well respected tribal and contemporary bellydancers, performing her unique shows at some of Sydney's top venues and is a regular at major Australian dance events and festivals. Last year, she was invited to join the world music and jazz fusion group "Masha's Legacy" as one of their regular soloists and is a contributing member of the contemporary bellydance collective "The Body Serpentine". She is also working on a collaborative choreography methodology, applying for research and development grants while work shopping it at the Wild Honey Dance Festival, Byron Bay in 2010 and again this year.

Hush Gypsy (ACT & The Gold Coast) The Hush Gypsy is known for her endless spins and skirt work - you can now be part of this vivacious movement. You will learn a variety of daring skirt sequences to travel, seduce, spin and strike accents in the music. The workshop music and dance will draw on Russian, Balkan and Spanish Gypsy styles. Be inspired to bring more 'showwomanship' to your dance. Bio: Hush Gypsy. A passionate and unpredictable performer, who draws from Rom-inspired styles, tribal fusion and burlesque. She regularly performs at events and festivals in Canberra, and across the East Coast. Her training has taken place in four cities in Australia, California USA and Toronto, Canada and span over a decade. In 2003, she danced for a short time with Roula Said's Roulettes in Toronto performing to live music by the Flying Bulgars Klezmer Band. For five years, the Hush Gypsy taught with the Canberra Dance Theatre, making dynamic dances for the Gypsy Dance Stage Show. In May 2011, she is planning to move to the Gold Coast, Queensland. *Bring a big skirt (at least full circle, but double circle is better).

Jacqueline & Maria (Wollongong) Tribal Jewels introduced this dynamic prop & delighted the audience at the 2010 Australian Tribal & Trance Festival. These large Shawls are traditionally from Spain & made of silk. First created for the purpose of covering ‘Grand Pianos’ , later of course worn in Women's fashion & by Flamenco Fusion Dancers the long tassels creating visual movement. This workshop will create an extension to your dance knowledge & stamina, (it’s a good workout!) Jacqueline & Maria look forward to sharing a few of their combos & moves using the Shawl. Unfortunately it doesn’t fit in so well with Bellydance costume regalia, so to keep your beautiful Manton fringing in tact, keep all your jewelery & hair flowers at bay.
What to bring: Large Manton is recommended or a Gypsy style shawl made of wool or similar.

Designed to compliment Improvisation, a few of these steps will be familiar & others will be a little tricky, these moves are easy to adapt & exciting to blend together with your current dance knowledge. Broken down & then drilled, in no time you will be totally B-Jeweled with these moves. From our delicate ‘Pot Hole Shimmy’ and the yummy ‘Caprioska’ you & your dancing sisters might even enjoy our newest move called’ A little Turkish on the Side’ Mmmmm its all very DELICIOUS! Conducts Functional Yoga classes on a weekly basis. Has experience in corporate and workplace training, workplace posture and ergonomics workshops. Her Yoga classes focus on relaxation, posture maintenance, co-ordination, balance, increasing range of movement, core strength and reducing aches and pains and improving well being.They combine traditional Hatha Yoga with Sports Science techniques including Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitated (PNF) stretching. |
